Resident Spotlight: Desiree Buchannan

First-year resident Desiree

This quarter we are spotlighting first-year resident Desiree Buchannan, who is developing her skills as an elementary school teacher at partner school KIPP Wisdom Academy. Desiree is from Champaign, IL. Before she joined St. Louis Teacher Residency she was working in the insurance industry.

Q: What led you to pursue a career in teaching through St. Louis Teacher Residency?

A: While working in the insurance industry I obtained a master’s from Lindenwood, and during my time there, I did a lot of reflection on how my life and others were impacted by education. After digging deeper into the current state of education, I decided to pursue a career in education. Education can be a tool used to move people and society forward. All students should have the opportunity to be in classrooms where they are empowered to learn and encouraged to be themselves while growing in every aspect. I believe that every child should have access to a quality education. I was interested in STLTR  because their mission aligned to my beliefs and their work centered around students from underserved and communities and communities that are considered “high risk.” I wanted to empower students and to be a representation for students whom may feel underrepresented, while working towards closing the achievement gap.

Q: What is your favorite aspect of teaching so far?

A: I would say my favorite aspect of teaching so far is being a part of student’s academic achievement  and being able to celebrate them accomplishing their goals. .

Q: What is your favorite aspect of the STLTR program?

A: My favorite aspect of the STLTR program is the support we’re given inside and outside of the classroom. I like that I have two people ( my instructional coach and my mentor) in my corner to help me see my areas of growth, provide feedback and to keep me grounded.
